How I Came to Life

내가 어떻게 태어났을까

 

  I like when Mom tells this story because it makes me laugh so much. It's not funny in the way a joke is funny, but when Mom tells it, Via and I just start cracking up.

어머니께서 이 이야기를 해 주시면 많이 웃었다. 농담이 웃겨서 재미있는 게 아니라, 어머니께서 입만 떼시면 비아 누나와 나는 그냥 자지러지며 웃기 시작했다.

 

  So when I was in my mom's stomach, no one had any idea I would come out looking the way I look. Mom had had Via four years before, and that had been such a "walk in the park" (Mom's expression) that there was no reason to run any special tests.

  그래서 내가 우리 엄마 뱃속에 있었을 때, 내가 그런 모양으로 밖에 나올 지 아무도 몰랐다아무도 내가 그런 모습으로 세상에 나올 지 몰랐다고 한다. 엄마는 4년 전에 비아를 가졌었는데, 어떤 검사도 받을 필요가 없었어서 우리 엄마 표현으로, 정말 식은 죽 먹기였다고 한다. 

 

About two months before I was born, the doctors realized there was something wrong with my face, but they didn't think it was going to be bad. They told Mom and Dad I had a cleft palate and some other stuff going on. They called it "small anomalies."

내가 태어나기 약 두 달 전, 의사들은 내 얼굴이 뭔가 이상하다는 것을 알아차렸지만, 그게 그렇게 나빠질 거라곤 생각하지 못했다고 한다. 의사들은 우리 부모님께 내가 구개열이 좀 있고 다른 것들도 진행되고 있다고 말했다. 그저 "작은 이상"이라고 말했다.

 

  There were two nurses in the delivery room the night I was born. One was very nice and sweet. The other one, Mom said, did not seem at all nice or sweet. She had very big arms and (here comes the funny part), she kept farting. Like, she'd bring Mom some ice chips, and then fart. She'd check Mom's blood pressure, and fart. Mom says it was unbelievable because the nurse never even said excuse me!

내가 태어난 그 날 밤, 분만실에는 간호사 두 분이 있었다고 한다. 한 분은 정말 착하고 좋은 분이었었다. 다른 한 분은, 우리 엄마가 말하길, 전혀 착하거나 성격이 좋아 보이지 않았다고 했다. 그 분은 정말 팔이 크셨다고 한다. 여기가 정말 재밌는 부분인데, 계속 방귀를 뀌셨다고 했다. 그러니까, 엄마한테 얼음팩을 가져다 주고나선, 방귀를 뀌셨다. 엄마 혈압을 확인하고 나서는, 방귀를 뀌셨다. 엄마는 간호사가 심지어 미안하다고 말도 하지 않으셔서 정말 두 눈을 믿을 수 없으셨다고 한다.

 

Meanwhile, Mom's regular doctor wasn't on duty that night, so Mom got stuck with this cranky kid doctor she and Dad nicknamed Doogie after some old TV show or something (they didn't actually call him that to his face). But Mom says that even though everyone in the room was kind of grumpy, Dad kept making her laugh all night long. When I came out of Mom's stomach, she said the whole room got very quiet.

그러는 동안, 엄마는 엄마의 담당 의사가 그 날 밤에 근무가 아니셔서 까다로운 신입 의사와 같이 있어야 했다. 아빠는 옛날 텔레비전 방송이던가 어디 다른 곳에서 따와 도기라는 별명을 붙였는데, 실제로 면전에 대고 그렇게 부르시지는 않았다. 하지만 엄마는 방 안에 있던 사람들이 모두 약간 성격이 안 좋았었음에도, 아빠는 하루종일 엄마를 웃게 하려고 노력했다고 말씀하셨다. 내가 엄마 뱃속에서 나올 때나오는 순간, 방 전체가 정말 조용해졌다고 엄마가 말씀해주셨다.

 

Mom didn't even get a chance to look at me because the nice nurse immediately rushed me out of the room. Dad was in such a hurry to follow her that he dropped the video camera, which broke into a million pieces. And then Mom got very upset and tried to get out of bed to see where they were going, but the farting nurse put her very big arms on Mom to keep her down in the bed.

엄마는 그 착한 간호사 분이 바로 나를 데리고 방 밖을 뛰쳐나가셔서 볼 기회조차 없었다고 하셨다. 아빠는 그 간호사를 서둘러 따라간다고 비디오 카메라를 떨어뜨리셔서떨어뜨리는 바람에 산산조각이 나버렸다고 한다. 엄마는 그 순간 정말 화가 나셨고 그 둘이 어디를 갔는지 보려고 침대 밖으로 나가려고 하셨지만, 뿡뿡이 간호사가 그 커다란 팔로 엄마를 침대에 진정시키려고 하셨다.

 

They were practically fighting, because Mom was hysterical and the farting nurse was yelling at her to stay calm, and then they both started screaming for the doctor. But guess what? He had fainted! Right on the floor! So when the farting nurse saw that he had fainted, she started pushing him with her foot to get him to wake up, yelling at him the whole time: "What kind of doctor are you? What kind of doctor are you? Get up! Get up!"

두 분은 거의 싸우고 있는 거나 다름 없었다고 한다. 그 때 엄마는 거의 반 미쳐 계셨고, 뿡뿡이 간호사는 그런 엄마한테 진정하라고 소리를 지르셨다. 그리고 또 그런 와중에 둘 다 큰 소리로 의사 선생님을 불렀다. 하지만 더 놀라운 일이 있었다. 그 의사가 기절해버린 것이다! 바로 그 자리에서! 그래서 뿡뿡이 간호사가 의사 선생님이 기절하신 걸 보고, 하루종일 소리지르고 발로 찌르면서 깨우려고 하셨다. "무슨 의사가 이래? 무슨 의사가 이러냐고? 일어나! 얼른!"

 

And then all of a sudden she let out the biggest, loudest, smelliest fart in the history of farts. Mom thinks it was actually the fart that finally woke the doctor Anyway, when Mom tells this story, she acts out all the parts—including the farting noises—and it is so, so, so, so funny!

그런데 갑자기 뿡뿡이 간호사는 방귀 역사상 가장 소리가 크고 가장 냄새가 고약한 방귀를 뀌었다고 한다. 엄마는 이 방귀가 그 의사를 깨운 결정적인 역할을 한 것 같다고 생각하신다. 어찌 됐든, 엄마가 이 이야기를 해 주실 때, 방귀 소리를 포함한 모든 것을 연기해 주셨는데 정말, 정말, 정말, 정말 재미있었다!

 

  Mom says the farting nurse turned out to be a very nice woman. She stayed with Mom the whole time. Didn't leave her side even after Dad came back and the doctors told them how sick I was. Mom remembers exactly what the nurse whispered in her ear when the doctor told her I probably wouldn't live through the night: "Everyone born of God overcometh the world." And the next day, after I had lived through the night, it was that nurse who held Mom's hand when they brought her to meet me for the first time.

엄마는 알고 보니 그 뿡뿡이 간호사가 정말 착하고 좋은 사람이었다고 말해주셨다. 하루종일 엄마와 같이 있어주셨다. 아빠가 오실 때나 의사 선생님들이 와서 내가 얼마나 아픈지 말해줄 때에도 항상 엄마 옆을 떠나지 않았다. 하루종일 엄마와 같이 있어주셨고, 아빠가 오실 때나 의사 선생님들이 와서 내가 얼마나 아픈지 말해줄 때에도 항상 엄마 곁을 떠나지 않았다고 한다. 엄마는 의사가 와서 내가 아마 그 날 밤을 못 넘길 것 같다고 말하셨을 때, 뿡뿡이 간호사가 엄마 귀에 속삭인 것을 정확히 기억하고 계셨다. "하나님께 난 자는 세상을 이겨내리라." 그리고 다음 날, 내가 그 날 밤을 넘기고, 의사 선생님이 처음으로 우리 엄마에게 나를 보여줄 때 우리 엄마의 손을 잡고 있던 사람도 바로 그 간호사 분이셨다.

 

  Mom says by then they had told her all about me. She had been preparing herself for the seeing of me. But she says that when she looked down into my tiny mushed-up face for the first time, all she could see was how pretty my eyes were.

  엄마는 그 때 의사 선생님들이 나에 대한 모든 것을 말씀해주셨다고 한다. 엄마는 나름대로 나를 볼 마음의 준비를 하셨었다. 하지만 엄마가 처음으로 내 일그러진 작은 얼굴을 보셨을 때, 눈에 들어온 건 내 눈이 얼마나 예쁜 지밖에 없었다고 한다.

1) 엄마는 그저 내 두 눈이 참 예쁘다고 생각하셨다고 한다.
2) 엄마는 내 두 눈이 예쁜 것밖에 보이지 않으셨다고 한다.

 

  Mom is beautiful, by the way. And Dad is handsome. Via is pretty. In case you were wondering.

앗, 참고로 말하자면근데 엄마는 예쁘시다. 그리고 아빠는 잘생기셨다. 비아 누나는 예쁘다. 읽는 여러분이 궁금해할까봐 말해주는 거다.
