The cop took a step or two.

경관은 한 두 걸음 떼며 말했다.

 

“I’ll go on my way,” he said. “I hope your friend comes all right. If he isn’t here at ten, are you going to leave?”

"이제 저는 제 갈 길 가겠습니다. 친구 분께서 오셨으면 좋겠네요. 그 분이 여기 10시까지 안 오시면, 그냥 갈 생각인가요?"

▶ 이제 저는 이만 가보겠습니다.

 

“I am not!” said the other. “I’ll wait half an hour, at least. If Jimmy is alive on earth, he’ll be here by that time. Good night, officer.”

"절대 아닙니다! 적어도 30분은 기다릴 겁니다. 지미가 이 지구에서 살아만 있다면, 시간 맞춰서 올 겁니다. 좋은 밤 보내십시오, 경관님." 그가 말했다. 

 

“Good night,” said the cop, and walked away, trying doors as he went. There was now a cold rain falling and the wind was stronger. The few people walking along that street were hurrying, trying to keep warm. And at the door of the shop stood the man who had come a thousand miles to meet a friend. Such a meeting could not be certain. But he waited.

"좋은 밤 되세요." 경관이 말했다. 그리곤 아까처럼 문을 확인하러 떠났다. 이젠 차가운 비가 떨어지고 있었고 바람은 더 세게 불었다. 거리에 남아있는 몇 안되는 사람도 추위를 피하려 서두르고 있었다. 그리고 그 가게 문 앞에는 친구를 만나려고 삼백 리를 온 사람이 있었다. 그런 만남은 확실하진 않았지만 그는 기다렸다.

About twenty minutes he waited, and then a tall man in a long coat came hurrying across the street. He went directly to the waiting man. “Is that you, Bob?” he asked, doubtfully. “Is that you, Jimmy Wells?” cried the man at the door.

기다린 지 20분 즈음, 긴 코트를 입은 키 큰 남자가 허둥지둥 길을 건너 왔다. 그는 기다리는 그에게로 곧장 직진했다. "밥, 너야?" 그가 미심쩍어하며 물었다. "그럼 너야, 지미 웰스?" 문 앞에 있던 남자가 거의 울면서 말했다.

 

The new man took the other man’s hands in his. “It’s Bob! It surely is. I was certain I would find you here if you were still alive. Twenty years is a long time. The old restaurant is gone, Bob. I wish it were here, so that we could have another dinner in it. Has the West been good to you?”

방금 온 남자는 다른 남자의 손을 잡았다. "밥! 정말 밥이야! 네가 살아만 있다면 여기서 찾게될 줄 알았어. 20년이면 긴 시간이잖냐. 옛날 식당도 사라졌더라고, 밥. 여기 그대로 있으면 그 때처럼 저녁을 먹을 수 있었을 텐데. 서쪽은 괜찮았어?"

 

“It gave me everything I asked for. You’ve changed, Jimmy. I never thought you were so tall.”

"내가 필요한 게 다 있더라고. 좀 바뀌었네, 지미. 네가 키가 크다고는 생각도 못했는데."

 

“Oh, I grew a little after I was twenty.”

"아, 20살 이후에 조금 크더라고."

 

“Are you doing well in New York, Jimmy?”

"뉴욕에선 잘 지내고 있어, 지미?"

 

“Well enough. I work for the city. Come on, Bob, We’ll go to a place I know, and have a good long talk about old times.”

"당연하지. 나 요새 일하잖아. 가자, 밥. 내가 아는 데로 가서 밤새도록 옛날 얘기를 해보자고."
