  1. Linguistic determinism

: Structure of language influences how its speakers percieve the world around them

  (언어 구조가 그 사용자가 세상을 인식하는 방향성을 결정한다)

→ Edward Sapir, Benjamin Whorf

 

1) Strong form: Thought is determined by language (완전히 controlled)

- Our language provides the structure within which we understand the world

(우리의 언어는 우리가 세상을 바라보는 구조를 제공함)

2) Weak form(linguistic relativism) : Thought is influenced (영향을 받는다)

- 우리가 세상을 바라보는 인지적인 메커니즘 잡는 정도

- 우리가 인지적 input을 가공하는 과정을 형성

 

▣ Strong form of language determinism이 틀렸다는 증거들

1) Hopi (Native American Tribe)

- Whorf (1956)가 연구함

- 호피는 현재, 과거, 미래 시제를 지칭하는 단어가 없음

- 그래서 다른 사람들과 다른 시간 개념이 형성됨

   ex) 시제에 관한 특정한 지칭어는 없어도, 시간을 가리키는 다른 표현은 있었음 (yesterday, tomorrow, days of the week, etc.)

- 나라마다 색을 지칭하는 단어 수가 모두 다름
