The Pronunciation of Morphemes
형태소 발음
Q) 복수를 의미하는 형태소는 어떻게 발음이 될까요?
각 단어 뒤에 복수의 의미를 가진 형태소 '-s'를 붙여 발음해 보자.
A: call, bar, sap, boyB: cap, cat, backC: bus, bush, buzz, matchD: chid, ox, mouse, sheep
그랬더니,
A+[z] - a voiced aleveolar fricativeB+[s] - a voiceless alveolar fricativeC+[əz]D - a hodge-podge
Allomorph [z] : After voiced nonsibilant segment (sibilant를 제외한 유성음)Allomorph [s] : After voiceless nonsibilant segment (sibilant를 제외한 무성음)Allomorph [əz] : After sibilant segments (sibilant 뒤에)※ sibilant(6개): [s]/[z], [ʃ]/[ʒ] (fricatives) [tʃ]/[dʒ] (affricatives)
Sibilants are sounds where the friction causes a hissing.
1. sibilant 앞에 [ə] 삽입
2. 무성음+[s]
1. Insert a [ə] before the plural morpheme /z/ when a regular noun ends in a sibilant, giving [əz].
2. Change the plural morpheme /z/ to a voiceless [s] when preceded by a voiceless sound.
(It's crucial that this rule apply after rule 1)
Q) 이번에는 과거를 의미하는 형태소는 어떻게 발음이 될까요?
A: gloat[glot], raid[red]
B: grabbed[grabd] plan [plæn]
C: reap[rip], poked[pokt]
A: 유성음, 무성음 상관 없이 [t], [d]로 끝나면 [əd]로 발음
B: 유성음으로 끝나면 [d]로
C: 무성음으로 끝나면 [t]로
A: If the verb ends in a [t] or a [d] (non-nasal alveolar stops), [əd]is added to form the past tense, similar to the insertion of [əz] to form the plural of nouns that end in sibilants.
B: If the verb ends in a voiced segment other than [d], you add a voiced [d].
C: If the verb ends in a voiceless segment other than [t], you add a voiceless [t].
[əd]가 있기 때문에 기본형은 [d]
1. non-nasal alveolar stop으로 끝나면 앞에 [ə]를 넣어서 [əd]가 된다.
2. 무성음(voiceless)으로 끝나면 [t]로 바꾼다.
1. Insert a [ə] before the past-tense morpheme when a regular verb ends in a non-nasal alveolar stop, giving [əd]
2. Change the past-tense morpheme to a voiceless [t] when a voiceless sound precedes it.
The output of rule 1, provides the input to rule 2, and the rules must be applied in order.
복수형과 과거형 이외의 Other morphophonemic rules:
1) the possessive morpheme
2) the third-person singular morpheme
※ 이 규칙은 모두 morpheme 바운더리 내에서만 일어남
