[1] should의 용법

1. 충고, 조언, 제안의 should

You should do something = it is a good thing to do or the right thing to do

ex) The man on the motorcycle should be wearing a helmet. (오토바이 타고 있는 그 남자는 헬멧을 쓰고 있어야 해.)You look tired. You should go to bed. (너 피곤해 보여. 자러 가는 게 좋을 것 같아.)

※ 가끔 should는 I think / I don't think / Do you think ...? 와도 어울림

A) Do you think I should apply for this job?B) Yes, I think you should.

 

2. (예상/기대하는 바에 따르면) V가 맞(는 건데 이상하)다

: when something is not right or what we expect

ex) Where is Tina? She should be here by now. 티나 어딨어? 걔 지금 쯤이면 여기 와야 하는데.(= she isn't here yet, and this is not normal.) (=티나는 지금 여기에 없고, 이건 정상이 아니다.)ex) The price on this packet is wrong. It should be two pounds, not three pounds.여기에 있는 가격은 틀렸다. 이건 3파운드가 아니라, 2파운드가 되어야 한다.

 

3. V할 거라/V 하지 않을 거라 예상/기대하다

: to say that we expect something to happen

ex) Helen has been studying hard for the exam, so she should pass. (= I expect her to pass)헬렌은 열심히 시험을 위해 공부를 했어서, 그녀는 통과할 거라 예상된다.ex) There are plenty of hotels in the town. It shouldn't be hard to find a place to stay. (= I don't expect it to be hard)도시에는 호텔이 많이 있다. 머무를 장소를 찾는 건 어렵지 않을 거라고 예상된다.

 

[2] should의 과거: should have p.p

⊙ 긍정: You should have done something = ~했어야 했어 / ~했으면 좋았을 텐데 (실제로는 하지 X / 유감, 아쉬움)

= You didn't do it, but it would have been a good thing to do

ex) You missed a great party last night. You should have come. Why didn't you?

(= you didn't come, but it would have been good to come)

넌 어제 굉장한 파티를 놓쳤어. 넌 왔었어야 했어. 왜 안 왔어?

(= 넌 어제 오지 않았지만, 왔으면 좋았을 거야)

 

⊙ 부정: You shouldn't have done something = ~하지 말았어야 했어 (실제로는 했음 / 후회)

= You did it, but it wasn't a good thing to do.

ex) I'm feeling sick. I shouldn't have eaten so much. (= I ate too much)

난 몸이 안 좋아. 많이 먹지 말았어야 했어. (=난 너무 많이 먹었어)

 

[3] ought to = should

현재 긍정 - ought to = should

현재 부정 - ought not to = oughtn't to = shouldn't

과거 긍정 - ought to have p.p = should have p.p

과거 부정 - ought not to have p.p = oughtn't to have p.p = shouldn't have p.p
