1. Paragraph Structure

- paragraph : 주로 하나의 main idea를 중심으로 하는 문장들의 모임

- main idea를 잘 전달할 수만 있다면 문장의 수는 상관X (한 문장이 될 수도 있음) 

- 첫 단어를 왼쪽에서부터 " 컴퓨터 기준 스페이스바 5칸 " 만큼 띄워서 적어야 함 = indenting

 

        1)  Topic sentence = main idea

        2) Supporting sentences

        3) Concluding sentences

 

1) Topic sentence : a topic + a controlling idea = main idea

- 주어와 동사를 갖춘 완전문

- main idea를 다루는 것이기에 너무 세부적인 내용까지 다룰 필요X

  (첫 문장만 보고 모든 내용을 다 아는 것은 독자도 원하지 않음)

= 너무 일반적이지도 X 너무 특정짓지도 X

- 보통은 문단의 맨 앞에 나오지만, 맨 뒤에 나올 때도 있음

 

Driving on freeways requires skills and alertness.

       = Topic                             = controlling idea

The Arabic origin of many English words is not always obvious. ( O )

 

The slang expression so long (meaning "good-bye") is probably a corruption of the Arabic salaam. ( X ) → too 특정적

 

English has been influenced by other languages. ( X ) → too 일반적

 

2) Supporting sentences

- 예시, 통계자료, 인용

- Topic sentence를 설명하거나 증명해주는 부분

- Topic sentence를 벗어나지 않고 잘 뒷받침해주되, 철두철미하고 납득가도록 작성

 

3) Concluding sentence

- 목적 1] 문단의 끝임을 알려줌

           2] 독자들이 기억해야 할 가장 중요한 내용을 상기시켜줌

                 - main point를 반복하거나 / topic sentence를 paraphrase해서

- 필수적인 부분은 아니기에 생략 가능 (주로 여러 문단이 이어져 있는 경우 생략함)

- At last (마침내) X : '시간이 오래 지난 끝에'라는 의미이기에 결론 부분에 적을 수 없음
