● 동명사, to부정사에 따라 의미가 달라지는 동사

remember | ~했던 것을 기억하다 I remember doing something = I did it and now I remember this remember 시점보다 더 이전에 완료 |
~할 것을 기억하다 I remember to do something = I remembered that I had to do it, so I did it. remember 시점보다 더 이후에 완료(예정) |
forget | ~했던 것을 잊어버리다 I forgot buying that book. 1) 먼저 그 책을 샀다. 2) 그 사실을 잊어버렸다. |
~할 것을 잊어버리다 I forgot to buy that book. 1) 잊고 있었다. 2) 그 책을 사야 할 것을 |
regret | ~한 것을 후회하다 I regret doing something = I did it and now I am sorry about it. +) 과거 표현 I now regret saying that. → I now regret having said that. |
~할 것이 유감이다 regret to say / to tell you / to inform you = I am sorry that I have to say ex) (formal letter) I regret to say that we are unable to accept your order. |
go on | 하고 있던 V를 계속 진행하다 go on doing something = continue doing the same thing ex) We need to change. We can't go on living like this. |
새로운 V를 진행하다 go on to do something = do or say something new ex) After discussing the economy, the president went on to talk about foreign policy. |
try | (그냥 한 번) 시도해봤어 try doing something = do it as an experiment or test ex) I didn't like the way the furniture was arranged, so I tried moving the table to the other side. (I moved it to see if it looked better) |
~하려고 노력했는데 (결국 못했어) try to do = attempt to do, make an effort to do ex) I tried to move the table, but it was too heavy. (so I couldn't move it) |
need | V될 필요가 있다(주어와 수동적 개념) ex) My phone needs charging. (=It needs to be charged) Does your suit need cleaning? (=It needs to be cleaned) It's a difficult problem. It needs thinking about carefully. (=It needs to be thought about carefully) |
V할 필요가 있다(주어와 능동적 개념) need to do something = it is necessary for me to do it ex) I need to charge my phone. |
● 의미 변화가 없는 동사
begin, start, continue, intend, bother
※ ing 뒤에는 ing 사용 X
ex) It's starting to rain. (O)
It's starting raining. (X)
● can't help ~ing: ~하지 않을 수 없어 = ~할 수 밖에 없어 = 어쩔 수 없어
I can't help doing something = I can't stop myself doing it.
ex) I don't like him, but he has a lot of problems. I can't help feeling sorry for him.
I'm sorry I'm so nervous. I can't help it. (=I can't help being nervous)
